Adhesion, considered as the bonding strength between the ceramic tile and the substrate, plays a very important role in the quality of the ceramic tile. Good adhesion must ensure that the tiles are firmly attached to the substrate. The evolution of new ceramic materials with low porosity, resistance to abrasion, frost, large formats, as well as their assembly or installation in industries, large commercial areas, façades, etc., have led to the development of adhesive products.
The knowledge acquired about the use of special adhesives means that the thick-bed tile installation process (mechanical adhesion) has been replaced by a thin-bed tile installation system (chemical adhesion) which offers clear advantages, especially in relation to the quality of the work, both in terms of adhesion and durability. A suitable adhesive should therefore be chosen according to the fixing surface and the type of ceramic tile.
It is very important to use the appropriate tools and equipment (notched trowel, white rubber mallet, spirit level and suction cup) when laying ceramic tiles.
It is also important to consider that the substrate or fixing base must be very clean of any remaining plaster, paint, etc. so that the adhesion will be able to perform its functions over time.
